Part 1 out of 5 in the illustrated series on weapons with inherent effects that I'm working on, is now up! It features a near-exhaustive list of polearms and staves, click here to check it out!
Whats this all about, you wonder? If you've played a spell caster or melee class in Cataclysm, you've undoubtedly noticed how some weapon models are completely lost under obnoxious enchants such as Landslide or Power Torrent.
With patch 4.3 and transmogrification, a solution was introduced.
Some weapons have inherent effects that are already present on the weapon without it being enchanted. When you transmog to an item with such a permanent (glow) effects, it will overwrite the graphics of any player-applied enchants, effectively removing the Landslide clutter from your screen (or any other enchant, for that matter).
So when you transmog your weapon A (which has 130 agility on it) to look like weapon B (which has a natural glow) the green glow from 130 agility will be nullified by the effect that is already present on weapon B.
So every weapon that already has a glow on it, will overwrite any user-applied enchant?
No, this is a common misconception.
Not all weapons that have a graphical effect on them, will overwrite enchants put on the weapon by players. The reason behind this is not known, and simply equipping the item or previewing it does not guarantee it won't show your weapon enchant when you transmog to it.
In five parts, Transmogrification has compiled a list of these weapons.
But how can I determine for myself if a weapon will or won't display enchants?
The only way to find out what your potential transmog weapon will look like with a weapon enchant, is through use of this script:
/script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("\124cffa335ee\124Hitem:ITEMIDCHANGEMEPLEASE:4099:0:0:0:0:0:0:0\124h[Item name]\124h\124r");
ITEMIDCHANGEMEPLEASE should be replaced by the ID of the weapon you are transmogging to. You can find the ID of an item at the end of wowhead.com/battle.net links, or in the tooltip of MogIt. This is always a number.
4099 is the enchant ID, in this case of Landslide. Some other enchant ID's:
I suggest you save this script as a macro, so you can use it as a quick reference in-game.
